A sense of charmed awkwardness and bittersweet tragicomedy infuses Friedrich Kunath's work. The tone of his titles, and the phrases that often are spelled out in his work, play a prominent role in an artistic practice that has encompassed drawing and painting, video and photography, sculpture and books. His works speak to universal experiences of yearning, disappointment, and discovery. His tentative outlines and bright yet transparent washes of color convey a simplicity or informality of means that is suggestive and beguiling. Abstraction and representation comfortably cohabitate in Kunath's expressionistic worlds. The artist's melancholy-prone art possesses the gentlest of self-deprecating humor and expresses a longing for human connection and revelation. What accumulates through the sentiments of apparent failure and futility is, in part, a playful projection of an artist-persona that is a world-weary solipsist, a hopeless hero, and a lost soul.
