Ryan Gander pays acute attention to the unobvious. His processes vary greatly from one project to the next as he connects disparate ideas and elements in what he describes as "a box full of possibilities, some are words, some are objects, some are places or events in history, but it's not knowing why they are intrinsically interesting that's the problem; the problem is getting them in the right order." Gander's 2008 film Man on a bridge--(A Study of David Lange) is an existential compilation of fifty 10-second takes of the actor David Lange walking across a bridge and looking over the railing. The artist repeats the same cinematic sequence with slight variations hinting at the passage of time and introducing a blank screen to separate the takes. As in much of Gander's work, both the repetition and the interstitial spaces created by the pauses present a non-traditional, slightly alien format suggestive of an unfamiliar visual language. In A sheet of paper on which I was about to draw, as it slipped from my table and fell to the floor (2008), crystal balls etched with the image of a falling sheet of paper reflect light, space, and a moment caught and suspended in time.
