I Wish Your Wish, 2003
screenprinted textile ribbons, drilled holes in wall
dimensions variable
Collection Juan and Patricia Vergez, Argentina, and Thyssen Bornemisza Contemporary Art Foundation, Vienna
Lobby
The wishes of various people are printed on textile ribbons, which relate to the church Nosso Senhor do Bonfim in São Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The ribbons are worn around the wrist where they are tied with three knots. A wish is made as each knot is tied. According to the tradition, the wishes come true when the ribbons tear apart and fall off the wrist. Visitors are welcome to take a ribbon and leave a wish behind. Wishes are collected and used to print new ribbons for the wall.

The Wish Wall is amazing. Its quite wonderful to see the many different types of people reading and making wishes and walking away with the ribbons. The colors reflect the different wishes as well as the different people who are taking the wishes. Def. a piece to come check out.

i loved this piece. It is one of the sweetest, most meaningful and most personal thing there ( in my opnion). i love that fact that wishes are shared with people who will bever meet each other, but still take the time to read them and think about them and wear them. At this very moment my wrist reads" I wish I make life proud of my achievements" and i left my wish there. I love the colors too. Take the time to check this out and connect!

Student's from Allard Elementary visited Life on Mars today and left wishes for others to take. Hopefully our wishes will come true.

interested, i looked into the wishing ribbons and found this informative travelogue: http://travelvice.com/archive/2007/02/salvador-bonfim-wish-ribbons.php
scroll to the bottom and read under "Wishing Protocol."

Thanks, whatzherface, for the email about wishing ribbons info on the website. It was a good read. Though I'm not much for "wishing," I think it's a sweet idea for Rivane Neuenschwander to take the general concept and share it with the world outside of Brazil.

I liked the piece's interactivity; I am reminded of the prayers left in the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
See this report from "Israel Business Today" of April 2nd, 1993:
"They can't guarantee a response, but Bezeq will send a fax on your behalf to the Almighty. The telephone company recently instituted a service that provides a late 20th century twist on the ancient Jewish tradition of placing written prayers between the cracks in the Western Wall. Users can send a written prayer to fax number 972-2-612222 and a Bezeq worker will place it between the cracks in the wall. The Western or Wailing Wall is the remnant of the retaining wall of the Second Temple, destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. A Bezeq spokesperson said that AT&T and MCI asked for exclusive rights to the service, but Bezeq turned them down. One can call 24 hours a day from any of 150 different countries."

At first I was appalled to see people taking ribbons from the exhibit wall. Then my friend pointed out to me that you're supposed to take them with you. My two read "I wish that the world is my home" and "I wish your wish". I also picked out two to send to my snail-mail friends and kept a third, "I wish all our wishes come true, hence no wishes will exist", just becauses I wish that the message will stay with me longer than my two bracelets. Thank you, Carnegie International, for allowing the wishes to find a wisher.

I really liked this exhibit, even though I do not know the person whose wish I wear...( I wish the world would be without conflict) .....I hope it comes true...

My bracelet reads, "I wish Democracy was real" but the wish that touched me more deeply was, "I wish I didn't have to wish"; I imagine someone that has lost all hope. So one of my wishes was to "wish your wishes".

This is a beautiful exhibit. The two wishes I took were "I wish to always be overwhelmed by love." and "I wish I could fly." :) I also took one to send to my friend at St. Vincent who just broke up with her boyfriend that says, "I wish love was easy." It seems appropriate.

So i honestly have like 7 of these. My fist one was "I wish religon was not an issue." that one means the world to me. It is so beat up and a complete mess but hasn't come off since june. My other ones are, "I wish to die in my sleep"(in french) I like this one because I feel like it would be the best way to go. who wants to be shot in the head? why not go pain free. "I wish to find true love" (in french) "I wish There was no stress in my life" I can't wait for that one to come true And then "I wish for silence"

I think these originated in Ireland.
We use them in memory of the three patron saints Patrick, Brigid and Columcille.
They are said to have been brought to Ireland by St. Brendan from the mythical island of Hy Brazil
and to have been worn by all three saints.
My understanding is that the custom found its way to brazil via the Yoruba people of Nigeria.

One word. "Beautiful!" I think this is a beautiful work of art. All of the colors on the wall is what really attracted me to this image. Then as a read each wish I was inspired by each little message. This was a very creative idea... a wish is a dream your heart makes..I hope everyone's wishes come true.

This was a great piece...
The ribbons I took read "I wish love was easy" and "Je desire mourir en dormant."

What a terrific interactive artwork!
I chose "I wish time was inconsequential" because it freaks me out to be 17 already.
Question for the artist: will the audience's wishes eventually be published/ribbonified?

the new wall is kinda lame.
i wish it had more languages, and more sayings.
its just the same thing over and over

I absolutely loved this wall, even more so after I found out a little bit about it. I took a few ribbons because I really liked them and couldnt pick just one. "I wish I had magical powers" & "I wish humans were more humane" are a couple of my favorites. The one Im wearing right now is "I wish to be the person I was meant to be." I didnt know that you could leave wishes of your own and I think it would be really cool to have mine printed. Im going back soon and am going to leave one of my wishes.
