2008 Carnegie International Advisory Committee
The members of the 2008 Carnegie International advisory committee, all outstanding leaders in the contemporary art world, were selected to serve as consultants and critical reviewers for Douglas Fogle, curator of contemporary art at Carnegie Museum of Art, as he organizes the 2008 Carnegie International. In addition to their contributions as advisors to the exhibition, they will also serve as the jury for the Carnegie Prize and Fine Prize.
Daniel Birnbaum
Director, Städelschule Art Academy and Portikus Gallery, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
A native of Sweden, Daniel Birnbaum has written extensively on art and philosophy and has organized more than 40 exhibitions. He was co-curator of the 2003 Venice Biennale and the first Moscow Biennial, in 2005. Other exhibitions include: Carsten Holler: Slides, Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland, 2000; and Syndrome: Olafur
Eliasson, Henrik Hakansson, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Rivane Neuenschwander, Konstakademien, Stockholm, Sweden, 2000. Birnbaum was formerly director of the International Artists' Studio Program in Stockholm.
Richard Flood
Chief Curator, New Museum, New York, NY
Before assuming the role as chief curator at the New Museum in 2005, Richard Flood was chief curator at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. During his 11 years at the Walker, Flood organized a wide range of shows, including the group shows Brilliant!: New Art from London and Zero to Infinity: Arte Povera 1962-1972, and
solo exhibitions of the work of Robert Gober, Sigmar Polke, and Matthew Barney. Flood was previously curator of PS1, director of the Barbara Gladstone Gallery, and managing editor of Artforum magazine.
Eungie Joo
Director and Curator of Education and Public Programs, New Museum, New York, NY
Eungie Joo joined the New Museum in 2007, and was previously director and curator at the CalArts Gallery at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT), Los Angeles, where her projects included: Nothing Is Neutral: Andrea Bowers; Damian Ortega: The Beetle Trilogy and other Works; Kara E. Walker's Song of the South; Margaret Kilgallen: In the Sweet Bye & Bye; and Cosmo Vitale: Gimhongsok & Sora Kim. Joo is co-founder of Six Months: Crenshaw (2003), a temporary site for conversation, exhibition, performance, and collectivity through dialogue and critique. She has a PhD in ethnic studies and has written numerous articles for art magazines and exhibition catalogues.
Chus Martinez
Director, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Spanish-born Chus Martinez is director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, a contemporary art center in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where she has organized a program of exhibitions and lectures that includes: 60 Seconds Well Spent, a video program; Ersa Erse; Wilhelm Sasnal; and Arturas Raila. The Power of Earth. From 2002 to 2005, Martinez was artistic director at Sala Rekalde, a contemporary exhibition space in Bilbao, Spain. A prolific author, Martinez has written essays, catalogue texts, and articles on the relationship between art theory and practice.
2008 Carnegie International graphic design and architectural firms
The graphic design firm COMA and Escher GuneWardena Architecture, Inc., have been selected to design the visual identity and physical plan of the 2008 Carnegie International.
COMA, based in Amsterdam and Brooklyn, New York, received recognition for its 2006 design of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum's Design Life Now: National Design Triennial. For the 2008 Carnegie International, COMA is designing the exhibition catalogue and all printed materials related to the exhibition, as
well as the gallery graphics.
Escher GuneWardena, based in Los Angeles, has worked in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and has received national and international recognition for its exhibition- and architectural designs. In 2003, it was one of only six architectural firms represented in the National Design Triennial at the Cooper- Hewitt. The firm is working with Carnegie Museum of Art's exhibition team to develop a design that will support the wide array of art objects in the 2008 Carnegie International.
