Working with teenagers sometimes I feel as though I am the Martian walking in the midst of this strange place called High School. The only common language we seem to speak sometimes is visual. I anticipate stimulating conversations about Life on Mars. Students are chomping at the chance to question and explore. It will be interesting to see how students relate to the various artists and which ones threaten them and who they are able to identify with, and what will challenge them.
I think based on some of the artists I've researched I am going to begin to probe and challenge my class with questions to get them thinking. I challenge you do the same. Ask your class questions based on how your chosen artists create their works. For example, Thomas Hirschhorn has stated that the energy of his works is more important than the craftsmanship. I'm curious to see how important craftsmanship in a work of art is.
I'll let you know how it works out.

I laughed at your posting when you wrote "I feel as though I am the Martian walking in the midst of this strange place called High School." I totally feel it at the elementary level. I hope you've looked into Zero Gravity for your students to challenge them. The internship that Zero Gravity is offering may be a great opportunity for some of your students.
