I have scheduled my field trip to the International with my fifth graders. Yes, personally, this is a very scary thing to bring elementary students for the first time to see an International exhibit or even approaching the idea of "teaching" some aspect of it. How to I prepare my students to face this unexplored universe? AGHHHHHHHHHH. After much thought, I researched some of the artists and zoned in to a few featured artists. Particularly, Paul Thek, (the image used to advertise the International). Here is an artist who uses a recylable material (newspaper) and paints upon it a globe...over top of pertinent information at the time. So with this thought in mind, I have come up with this idea to introduce my students to his work: 1.) covering the hallways to the art room at my school, 2.) letting students glue, paint, attach photos, write or draw over top and 3.) Photograph the finished work and compare it to Thek.
Any thoughts to this way of integrating this idea to another subject area? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks everyone!
