Reading several of the other posts brought back images from past Carnegie Internationals. What I cant believe is that it has been so long since i saw them. I remember as if it were yesterday the Schnabel and Kiefer paintings form the '80s that anna mae mentioned. A few works stick in my mind although I now couldnt say which International they were from. I first went to the Internationals in the 60's with my grandmother who was an artist. I loved the excitment of an opening and seeing the colorful characters that attended. She would pronounce a verdict on each piece and I loved feeling a part of that edgy world.
I attended for a few years as an art student and finally for many years as an art teacher. I love taking students to the show and every class of mine attends every International. It is most fun to take elementary students. They have such visceral reactions; they either love or hate a work at first sight. The work that I remember the most is one that I don't know the year or even the artist (can someone refresh my memory?). It was the giant table and chairs right at the beginning of the gallery. I liked it so much because my students were so enthralled. It made me feel connected with them because now I was as small as they probably felt so often. Can't wait to make some new memories for myself and my students.
