A little late to cram in a field trip this year? Administration reluctant to approve a late trip? About to pull your hair out because the year is winding down and you can't imagine taking 30+ kids to a contemporary art show with a few weeks left? I say wait till next year! Take advantage of the time and go to the exhibit several times over the summer, make notes, and plan. Because, of course as everyone knows, we teachers don't work over the summer right? (*Please note the sarcasm). This will have you ready to bring a class to see the CI08 during the first weeks of the 08-09 school year. In the past I have brought my independent art class down to the museum during the fisrt week of school. This is a fantstic way to get your students pumped and ready to go with ideas and excitiment for the upcoming school year's projects. It also gives them some ideas and places to start if they have to generate their own ideas for their work. The bonus is that there are not many classes using the museum as a resource at this time and the galleries are not as crowded with other classes. Don't worry about this year...look forward to next!

I did get my students in to see the show with a great docent. Just about each area of the galleries presents the work of only one artist (sometimes 2 or 3). My students were struck with how they got to walk in and around the works of art and discussing them was about their personal reactions to so many different kinds of media and techniques. They felt as though seeing the exhibition was almost like walking into a painting itself. We didn't feel like we were standing back and looking at something distant or separate from us beginning with the Barry McGee on the ramp up to the elevators but also the Vija Celmins paintings of the sky. The docent encouraged us to put our questions and comments on this site so that Douglas Fogle can respond to them in the talk he is giving on May 22 that is open to the public. I wonder if he can comment on the physical experience of be immersed in the works of art and if he organized the exhibition with this in mind? How much did he decide where to put things and how much was up to the artists?
