Flooded with five feet of water in the Mattress Factory basement, archictect and artist, Yumi Kori spirits you away to an otherworldly environment where you lose a sense of time and space in her hypnotic installation, Kanata
Kanata is a Japanese word that means "far in the distance". "It can imply simply a far off place or the space that exists beyond one's perception."1
Walking in the dark on a pier like structure extending from the floor you instantly feel uneasy. Your instincts kick in and your senses are heightened as you're drawn to a red rectangular doorway like a moth to a lightbulb. Behind the red rectangle is a textured wall like the inside of a cave while layers of white noise add to the strange alien environment. The red rectangle reflects back on the black water creating an optical illusion between depth and flatness.
"The piece encourages us to ask some existential questions, why are we here? Kori is intereted in creating desire int he audience, the desire to "go", somewhere, but where? Why do we all have this desire to "go", where are we all headed on our personal journeys?"2
Although the piece made me feel uncomfortable at first slowly I felt more at ease as I stood in a meditative kind of state, thinking. The installation makes whoever walks in more aware of their surroundings and theirself in space.
"I hope the viewer will obtain a contemplative state of mind by looking at the light space in the dark water and be able to travel beyond the worldly."3
